We chose a 70 kilometer loop from Tasiilaq to Sermilik Fjord through Lake 168, then north around Mittivakkat Glacier, east to Lake 5 and back south to Tasiilaq. The route is described in the “Hiking Routes in East Greenland”, in route sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 3.1a, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4. We decided to walk the route clockwise (backwards from the description in the book), so that the more difficult parts with orienteering and river crossings are in the beginning of the trip, when we still have time.
Since we were only two people, we decided to stay away from glaciers – for safety reasons. This resulted in lighter packs (no need for crampons, ropes etc), but the route became more difficult in section 3.1a (dotted line on the map), with two extra river crossings and climbing up and down the moraine.
The day hike was 5km one way, and is not described in the book. It is shown with a thicker red line on the map. The rest of the route is printed with the red line, where section numbers correspond to the sections above.
